We have developed a new approach to managing our environment and natural resources. The Living Wales Programme worked on this new approach between 2010 and 2013.

Under the Government of Wales Act 2006 we have a legal duty to sustainable development.

It states that:

Welsh Ministers must make a scheme ("the sustainable development scheme") setting out how they propose to promote sustainable development.

Two other key duties apply:

  • Welsh Ministers must report each year on how the proposals set out in the scheme have been implemented; and
  • After every National Assembly for Wales election Welsh Ministers must also publish a report assessing how effective they have been (through the scheme) in promoting sustainable development.
