The scheme operates across Wales and concessionary pass holders can travel free at any time of day.
Walking and cycling are among the priorities of the Welsh Government's policies for an integrated and sustainable transport system.
Road

Transport plays a vital role in our daily lives. It helps people access jobs, services, education, health, leisure and social facilities.

Improving transport is an important way of delivering economic, social and environmental objectives and enhancing quality of life.

Buses

Free local bus services

Buses play an especially important role in achieving our objectives for an integrated transport system that is safe, efficient, clean and fair. Most local bus services are provided commercially, but local authorities subsidise services that they consider essential for social reasons.

All residents of Wales aged 60 and over have been able to travel free on local bus services throughout Wales and even a short distance into and from England since April 2002. More than 531,000 free passes have been issued by the 22 local authorities in Wales, and the scheme has helped turn around what had been a long-term decline in bus travel. The scheme is fully funded by the Welsh Government. Contact your local council to apply for a pass.

Improving our national bus network

The Assembly Government is also funding a network of longer-distance bus services. Improved services and new vehicles are already on routes between Bangor and Aberystwyth, Wrexham and Barmouth, Brecon and Newtown, and in Ceredigion. They are planned to run throughout rural Wales and will be branded TrawsCambria.

Rail

Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is available to anyone aged 60 years and over. It entitles rail passengers to a saving of one third on most Standard and First Class rail fares throughout Great Britain for twelve months. The card costs £28. The only restriction is on morning peak period services, Monday to Friday (not including Public Holidays) when journeys are made wholly within the London and South East area.
