Mr Andrews will launch a new Tafwyl app, providing information on the capital city’s week-long Welsh language festival, at the opening event in Cardiff Castle on Saturday, 23 June.
Mr Andrews said:
“Without a doubt, more Welsh language digital content is needed and it is very important that the Welsh language is used online.
“I want to ensure Welsh speakers are able to use new technologies and digital media through the medium of Welsh and this must happen if the language is to flourish.”
The Tafwyl Fair at Cardiff Castle is the first event of Tafwyl week, an annual festival established by Menter Caerdydd in 2006 to celebrate the use of Welsh in Cardiff. This year, for the first time, Tafwyl is also being held as part of the annual Cardiff Festival.
There will be numerous stalls in the fair promoting Welsh produce, and workshops, literary sessions, music, cookery, art and drama sessions. On the main stage there will be live performances by folk, rock and pop artists, acoustic sessions, street entertainers, dance sessions, sports field, and activities for children of all ages.
Following the fair, events will be held across the city in various locations, including Chapter, Sherman and the National Museum. They will include literary and historical events, gigs, comedy, films, sports, plays, events for nursery age children and activities for learners.
Mr Andrews added:
“Cardiff has seen an amazing increase in the number of Welsh speakers over the past 10 years. It’s great to see this event celebrating that and I’m particularly please to see that so many Welsh language primary schools will be performing at this year’s Tafwyl Fair.
A clear indication of Tafwyl’s success is that since its establishment six years ago it has developed to such an extent that a new, larger location was required for this year’s event.”
The Tafwyl Fair takes place at Cardiff castle on Saturday, 23 June from 12 to 8pm and entry is free. The Tafwyl app is now available from iTunes or Google Play.
