Appointments to the Advisory Panel to the Welsh Language Commissioner

The Minister responsible for the Welsh language, Leighton Andrews, today announced the membership of the first Advisory Panel to the Welsh Language Commissioner.

The members are: Dr Ian Rees, Mrs Virginia Isaac, Mr Gareth Jones and Professor Gwynedd Parry. Their appointments will run from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2015. Dr Rees will Chair the Panel.

The Advisory Panel was appointed under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011. The Commissioner may consult the Advisory Panel in connection with the exercise of his or her functions.

Leighton Andrews said:

“I am delighted that Dr Rees, Mrs Isaac, Mr Jones and Professor Parry have agreed to be members of the Advisory Panel. The Panel will have an important role to play in providing support and advice to the Commissioner.”

The Welsh Language Commissioner, Meri Huws, said:

“Members of the Panel have been appointed following an external recruitment process. We now have a Panel of interesting individuals who I can turn to when I want to consult on any matter.”
