The line currently runs for 8 miles to Carrog but the long term aim has been to extend the line by a further 2.5 miles to Corwen, bringing tourism benefits to that town. The work, backed by £500,000 Welsh Government funding, is now well underway.
The First Minister saw the plans and had an update on progress during a visit to Llangollen station.
The First Minister said:
"The Welsh Government has always supported the plan to extend the railway to Corwen. The Llangollen Railway is an impressive tourist attraction, and extending its benefits to Corwen can only be a positive thing for the area.
"It is a real boost for the tourism industry and will provide opportunities for businesses in Corwen and for tourists as they are able to explore more of this beautiful area by steam."
