Alun Pugh, Minister For Culture, Welsh Language And Sport
I am pleased to announce that the Assembly Government is currently consulting directly with 59 bodies with a view to their being specified as public bodies for the purposes of the Welsh Language Act 1993 by an Order under Section 6 (1) (o) of that Act. Letters were sent out to the bodies concerned at the beginning of March with a 30 day response deadline in line with previous exercises. The effect of a body being “specified” would be to enable the Welsh Language Board to notify that body to prepare a Welsh Language Scheme under the Act.

Any Order would be made post election in accordance with the new arrangements under the Government of Wales Act 2006. Subject to the responses received from the bodies we are consulting and final Ministerial decision, that Order is likely to be the largest ever in terms of the number of bodies specified.

I have said on a number of occasions that there is plenty of life in the current Welsh Language Act. The work we are doing in bringing a whole swathe of bodies under the scope of the Act for the first time amply demonstrates that point.
